Bannerman Island Gallery presents:
The Contemporary Landscape 2019

The landscape painters in this exhibition aren’t necessarily faithful recorders. The artists challenge long standing concepts of what a landscape can be. They go beyond the surface, seeking to transform, not just to copy. They are residents of particular places, sharing knowledge about their home territory, the seasons and their lives. This show is about a process of discovery among artists, rather than just the appearance of the land. This exhibit seeks to create a deeper experience between the artists, the viewer and the surrounding world. They work alone, yet here, in this exhibit, a larger picture emerges. They invite us to appreciate and to value what surrounds us and to be richer for it.

Daniela Cooney was born in Switzerland and moved to New York at an early age. She studied illustration at The Pratt Institute. She takes her inspiration from around her home in the Hudson Valley, painting in water soluble oils and acrylics. Her love of animals and natural landscapes is prevalent in her vibrant paintings. For more on her work:https://www.danielacooney.com.

Tarryl Gabel is an award winning Hudson Valley Artist residing in Hyde Park NY. Finding inspiration from nature, Tarryl prefers to paint the landscape plein air, but also works in the studio on still life, wildlife and western-themed paintings when she cannot be outdoors. “I consider a painting successful when it evokes or captures a certain mood or feeling that the viewer(s) get caught up or “lost” in and I strive to make this emotional connection through my art.” For more on her work: https://www.tarryl.com.

Laura Garramone says: “Pastel is the medium of my choice because of the pure color. Pastels are extremely versatile and can produce intensely vibrant colors as well as soft, subtle shades of pale tones.” Laura is a self-taught pastel artist with both formal and informal instruction including watercolor, acrylics and mixed media. Her work is inspired by the natural beauty of Greene County and everyday surroundings. For more on her work go to: https://pastelistlgarramone.wix.com/laura.

Judith Beringer Hraniotis says: “The varied atmospheric conditions during the changing seasons, strongly influence my art.” The Hudson Valley offers Judith a richness of subjects. Judith is an artist specializing in landscape oil painting and pen & ink drawings. https://www.judithberinger.net.

Susan Miiller explores ways of making an age old painting tradition fresh and original. She has exhibited extensively in museums and galleries throughout the US and has received numerous awards and grants including NYFA, Artists Fellowship, Orange Arts Grants, and Artist In Residence Awards. Susan received an M.F.A. degree in 1992 and has been teaching faculty at SUNY since 1999. Her work is included in many important public and private collections. The Bannerman Castle Trust, Inc. (BCT) and Bannerman Island Gallery located at 150 Main Street in Beacon, NY  will host a special Photography Day for professional photographers on Bannerman Island on Saturday, October 5th, 2019.  Thirty photographers will be taken to the historic island on the BCT’s tour boat the “Estuary Steward” for a day of photography.  This is a magnificent opportunity for photographers – the island is located in the Hudson River Highlands between Beacon and Cold Spring – just across from Cornwall on Hudson – an area known for some of the most spectacular views on the Hudson River.  Bannerman Castle, the Bannerman residence and the island’s trails will also be great focal points for many artists.

Photographers are invited to deliver two photographs to the gallery Wednesday, Thursday or Friday, October 10, 11, or 12 from 3:00-6:00pm – for a special exhibition featuring the new works – opening in the gallery the following week, on Saturday, October 12th.   Two works will be accepted from each artist. The photographs will hang in the gallery through Sunday, December 29th.   A registration fee of $110 is required to participate in this photography event – covering the boat trip, lunch, snacks and gallery fee.  For more information on this event please call Bannerman Island Gallery at 845-831-1001.
